What do you do when you have a question? These days most people turn to the Google search bar. But back in the 20th century, knowledgeable people were the search bars and libraries full of books were the internet. If you had a question in 1966, you could call your local librarian and ask them to point you in the direction of the best resource. The New York Public Library hotline was established in 1967, but even before that curious citizens called with queries. Many of these questions were recorded by the librarians, and they include some amusing and random insights into people's quests for information.

The questions are recorded on small cards like those that used to fill card catalogs. Typed on a typewriter or scrawled in loopy handwriting, the questions are sometimes notated alongside their answers. People asked a variety of things. In 1963, someone whose identity has been lost to history asked, “Any statistics on the life span of the abandoned woman?” One can only imagine the story behind the question. Other questions clearly were inspired by recent events. On May 27, 1947, a caller asked, “What does it mean when you dream you’re being chased by an elephant?” No answer is given on that card.

Other questions have a bit of a creepy undertone. On November 30, 1948, someone asked, “Where can I get all available statistics on volume of business, money involved, etc. in the sale of cadavers?” If the librarian asked follow up questions it was not recorded. In 1976, an art lover asked, “Why do 18th century English paintings have so many squirrels in them, and how did they tame them so that they wouldn't bite the painter?” One can only hope the librarian cautioned the caller about domesticating squirrels. Other questions are much more practical, like: “Off-hand, do you happen to know a really good book about having twins?”

Is the squirrel query a stupid question? “There are no stupid questions,” NYPL Librarian Rosa Caballero-Li says. “Everything is a teachable moment. We don't embarrass people; we try to answer any questions they have with honesty and we try to refer them to appropriate resources that they might find useful.” The NYPL still offers their ask-a-librarian call in service, which despite the existence of Google gets 30,000 questions a year. “We don't know everything,” Caballero-Li told NPR, “But we can always point you in the right direction.” To get those burning questions answered, about squirrels or anything else, call 917-275-6975 between 9 am and 6 pm EST on business days.

Before there was Google, people had to rely on their local library to have their questions answered.

Australian Firefighters Calendar

A new year means a new calendar. While there are many creative options out there, one of the most iconic is the Australian Firefighters Calendar. Since 1993, it has produced wildly popular photos of handsome men to help raise money for Australian charities. For 2024, it presents six editions for fans to choose from, including several in which the dashing heroes pose alongside adorable animal co-stars.

The calendar features over 25 Australian firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. The Classic calendar is the edition that many are acquainted with, in which each of the men poses shirtless for the camera. In the Hero edition, which is new this year, the firefighters are captured in action—including unrolling hoses, climbing ladders, and even standing in the middle of fire. Of course, some of the most anticipated and lovable editions feature these brave men with cuddly animals, like the Cat edition, Dog edition, Horses edition, and Mixed Animals edition (which includes koalas, meerkats, and more). “From cuddly koalas to playful kittens, these visuals capture the compassion that these firefighters stand for both in and out of uniform,” its official statement explains.

The Australian Firefighters Calendar has helped raise over $3.4 million to charities since its launch 30 years ago. They continue to pledge donations with the sales from this year's calendar. “The calendar’s proud history of supporting animal refuges and Australian Wildlife in the past, will continue into the future. Australia’s Rural Firefighters and children suffering from cancer will also once again benefit from donations,” they add. Among the charities that the calendar assists are The Queensland Koala Society, Kids with Cancer Foundation, Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, and Safe Haven Animal Rescue.

You can purchase the Australian Firefighters Calendar 2024 through their online store.

Low Cost Halloween Costumes

Whether you're putting a costume together for Halloween, a party, or convention, assembling the clothes and accessories can get pretty expensive. However, there's a way to dress up on a budget. Instagram cosplayer Anucha Saengchart, aka Lonelyman, proves this in his hilarious transformations. Using basic items, food, and pets, as well as some camera tricks, he is able to turn into a variety of characters and icons from pop culture on a budget.

Saengchart demonstrates the process of each of his cosplays in a series of four photos. The top two images usually focus on him getting ready, whereas the bottom left shows the finished product and the bottom right reveals the original inspiration. For one of his most recent costume creations, Saengchart imitates the Internet Explorer logo. All that's needed is a blue and white long-sleeve t-shirt, and a carefully placed hula hoop covered in yellow fabric.

Many of his most-liked cosplays recreate characters from anime and films. Saengchart even turned into Barbie in her vintage beach costume from the movie by stacking butter cookies on his forehead (to mimic her curly bangs) and tossing on a blonde ponytail and pair of white sunglasses. He used even fewer props to become Batman. There, he wore a black turtleneck and placed a black cat on his head. The glare of the green-eyed feline is a near-perfect match with the caped hero of Gotham City.

Funny Eraser That Balds

Everyone makes mistakes, which is why a good eraser is a must-have. While most don't think of it as the most exciting stationery supply to pick out, there are many cute erasers that add a bit of whimsy to your desk. Japanese artist Kazuya Ishikawa, for instance, designed a playful eraser that begins as a human character with a full head of hair, but as it is rubbed against paper, the man will begin to bald.

The cartoon figure resembles a stereotypical office worker in a brown suit and tie. He is rendered with a concerned expression on his face, which makes sense as you begin to use it. Just like a normal eraser sheds with continued usage, this one does too. Only, due to the creative design, the first part of the eraser to fall away is the crop of black hair.

As a result, the more mistakes one makes, the more hair the man loses. He might develop a balding pattern in the front of his head or at the back, but eventually, he will lose all of his hair. So, it's no wonder he seems so worried! Ishikawa also created another character with the same idea, only this man is dressed as a monk and seems completely at peace with his fate. In this case, there is less guilt about being the cause of the character losing his lush locks, so you might feel freer to erase away.

While this product is just a concept design for now, the mass appeal might mean a real “balding” eraser to purchase in the near future. You can keep up to date with Ishikawa's latest projects and designs by following him on Twitter.

As you rub the eraser against paper, the design will naturally wear off, making the character turn bald.

Over the years, Fat Bear Week has grown into a thrilling competition. And now, the champion of the 2023 competition has been revealed. This year, a brown female bear known as 128 Grazer has been crowned the winner after dazzling the crowds with her determination…and chubbiness. On her way to first place, she has even subverted the river hierarchy usually ruled by male bears.

Katmai National Park, which runs the contest, announced her win on Instagram. “Congratulations to 128 Grazer, our 2023 #FatBearWeek champion! This fierce queen ran away with every one of her matches (and our hearts) and has earned her very first #FatBearWeek win!” they wrote. “Though she may be blissfully unaware of her new title in this imaginary competition, her success is real!”

The fatter a bear gets by the end of the summer, the more chances it has of making it through the winter, which is why Fat Bear Week goes beyond a fun trend. “In the bear world, fat equals success, and all the bears have been working endlessly to pack on the pounds needed to survive winter hibernation,” the park explains. “It's a competition where all the contenders are winners.”

To make her way to the top, 128 Grazer challenged even some of the biggest bears in the community. Despite looking lean during the summer, she has grown into a such large creature that she has no issue intimidating her fellow bears. And when her size has not been enough, she has resorted to being ruthless and aggressive. This has paid off, as being one of the most feared and respected bears has allowed her to get some of the best fishing spots in Katmai's Brooks River. In the end, she defeated the runner up, 32 Chunk by a landslide—108,321 to 23,134 votes.

As the warmer months come to a close, the Katmai Park bears will pluck the last salmon from the river before digging their winter dens. After sleeping through the winter, they'll lose about a third of their body fat. But come spring, they'll triumphantly emerge next year, ready to do it all over again.

On July 20, 1969, the world watched Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon and deliver the famous line: “This is one small footstep for man and one giant leap for mankind.” Over 50 years later, this remains a defining moment in the scientific field, inspiring many subsequent Moon missions, like the recent Chandrayaan-3 landing. However, NASA's Apollo missions weren't all about work. There are many videos online that show astronauts having fun in the lunar gravity as they learn how to walk, jump, and even play sports.

There are videos from all six of the manned lunar missions—Apollo 11 (1969), Apollo 12 (1969), Apollo 14, Apollo 15 (1971), Apollo 16 (1972), and Apollo 17 (1972). These clips highlight funny outtakes of astronauts tripping over the surface of the Moon and gently falling over. Between the bulky white suits and the strange new environment, it's not a surprise that they struggle to traverse the surface. However, it is still amusing to see these highly trained and skilled astronauts fumbling around in space.

In some of these videos, astronauts can be heard singing merry tunes. The joy in their voices is clear as they narrate what it's like to hop all around or play golf—the latter of which proved to be trickier than expected. It seemed like they certainly knew how to keep busy between the different games and activities. Watching the lunar rover slowly drive across the gray terrain, kicking up moondust as it goes by, is equally exciting.

Hopefully, with the first manned lunar mission in decades on the horizon, and the Artemis II crew chosen, there will be more videos of Moon shenanigans to enjoy soon.

On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the Moon.

However, NASA's Apollo missions weren't all work and no play.

There are many videos online that show NASA crews learning how to walk, jump, and even play sports in lunar gravity.

Several of these astronauts are recorded singing as they explore the Moon.

And of course, seeing astronauts drive the lunar rover is always fun.

Irish Farmers Calendar 2024

With the end of 2023 quickly approaching, it's nearly time to start thinking about a new calendar. For those who want an entertaining series of 12 photos to get them through the year—complete with cute animals and shirtless men—the 2024 Irish Farmer Calendar has just recently been unveiled. The newest edition of this beloved classic features the “fan favorites” from the calendar's 13-year history in celebration of the project's wide-reaching success.

Opening the calendar reveals a new farmer for each month. Some of these men are captured cuddling rabbits or goats, while others pose seductively amidst a curated agricultural setting. These images include fellas from Cork, Wexford, Dublin, Roscommon, Tipperary, and Kilkenny. “This year the calendar is a special edition of Fan Favorites featuring images from the last 13 years shot in locations over six counties and featuring the work of four talented photographers,” the team says. “So far, this has gone down a treat with fans and we see new orders coming in every day from all over the world. It is great to see the calendar still has universal appeal in its 14th year.”

These playful photos encapsulate some of the most charming aspects of agricultural life. Not only are there plenty of animals, but there are haystacks, beautiful greenery, and rustic houses. “Variety is important, hence why we connected with many different farms over the years,” Ciara Ryan, creator of the Irish Farmer Calendar, explains. “All of the farms we worked with were extremely helpful during our photoshoots, for which we will be forever grateful for making the calendar what it is today. It really is a team effort as a lot of work and planning goes into the calendar behind the scenes.”

The calendar's continued popularity is not only due to its human and animal models but also its whimsical and oftentimes humorous compositions. “Ireland can be viewed by many, and rightly so, as a romantic setting with 40 shades of green, a friendly nation who are known for their ‘céad míle fáilte‘ which is Irish for ‘one hundred thousand welcomes,'” Ryan adds. The final fan-favorite images were chosen based on the reception they received on social media and scrolling through the collection, it is easy to see why they've become so popular.

You can purchase the 2024 Irish Farmer Calendar via their website for €12.99 (or about $13.74).

When planning a wedding, selecting the guests is one of the main things a couple must get down. But sometimes, even the most thorough planning can't foresee whether one of the attendees may steal the spotlight at the party—especially if said guest happened to be a fluffy llama. Recently, a llama named J joined a wedding in upstate New York, and its uniquely designed tuxedo made him look less like a cute animal and more like a dapper groomsman.

Jr’s handlers are Llama Adventures, a farm dedicated to “bringing the joy of llamas to everyone.” And what better way to bring joy than with a cute creature dressed up as a party guest? To make it look like J is standing on two feet and elegantly donning a tuxedo, the llama's costume features a pair of elegantly crossed hands and neatly ironed pants. When viewed from the perfect angle, the llama's rear becomes hidden, creating the illusion that he is calmly posing for photos, getting smooches from the bridesmaids, and chatting with fellow groomsmen, all while standing like a hybrid human-llama.

As his cool demeanor shows, this is not J’s first rodeo—or wedding, to be more precise. “He also regularly attends birthday parties, nursing homes, school events, etc,” the Llama Adventures team tells My Modern Met. However, being part of Tara and Adam's wedding as something closer to a best man than a curious critter was truly especial for both his handlers and the guests.

On top of the cool sight of a llama, his visit held a much deeper meaning. “It was the bride’s mother who contacted us about bring a llama to the wedding. It was a surprise for the bride,” Llama Adventures recalls. “Apparently it is her life dream to own a llama farm.” As the pictures show, Tara seems thrilled to share her special day with the llama, not only cheekily posing for family pictures, but even having it stand as part of the groomsmen during the ceremony.

As for the llama, whose full registered name is BC JJ’s Hallelujah, he seems to be having a blast. “J takes it all in stride and enjoys the attention,” his handlers add. “It’s always fun to take J (and/or other llamas) to events. In most cases it’s people’s first up close and personal experience with llamas. As our tag line says, we love sharing the joy of llamas with others. J in particular is a great ambassador.”

Soccer Player Pulls Out UNO Reverse Card After He’s Given a Yellow Card by the Referee

In soccer, nobody enjoys getting a yellow card, even if it’s well deserved after playing too rough or for simply buying time. That’s why soccer stars around the world likely felt avenged by a player who, when carded by the referee during a match, unexpectedly pulled out an UNO reverse card.

If you’re not familiar with soccer, yellow cards are a warning from referees. Most are given after a dangerous play, but there are some other violations that get you carded like raising your voice to the referee or removing your jersey to celebrate when you score a goal. One yellow card allows you to keep playing, but a second one gets you ejected from the game.

In any other professional match, the clever move of pulling out an UNO reverse card would have gotten the player a red card—that mean automatic ejection, no warning. However, this genius move wasn’t pulled off by a professional player, but by a YouTube star during a charity match. Creator Max Fosh was playing as part of a YouTube All-Stars squad, who faced the Sidemen FC, a team formed by YouTube starts belonging to the Sidemen Group.

As brilliant as it was, some people had their doubts. Fosh seems to pull out a green UNO card. Should it have been a yellow UNO card for it to be a valid play (as per UNO rules)? Either way, the referee in question, ex-Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, couldn’t help but smile. Who knows? He may as well be the first person to enjoy being carded.
