When we think of the way people listened to music 100 or 150 years ago, the first thing that comes to mind is likely the phonograph. While it was certainly a novel invention, the quality of the sound was far from ideal. And while the luckier ones maybe had an instrument at home for playing music on special occasions, the sound produced by a live orchestra was limited to the big halls—at least, that was the case until the turn of the 20th century, when a technological marvel hit the market, called the Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina Model B.

Among the new developments in music at that time was the pianola, a self-playing piano that operated with perforated paper or metallic rolls, which held the notes the instrument had to play for a certain melody. Building on this concept, German musical instrument maker took this creation to the next level, ultimately creating the violina. Rather than just listening to a piano, this invention gave the people within earshot an experience quite similar to a live orchestra, with three self-playing violins in tune with a pianoforte.

The ingenuity and versatility of the Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina Model B made it quite popular; however, its steep price tag meant that only exclusive locales got to acquire one to entertain their patrons. M.S. Rau, a New Orleans-based antique gallery, is home to one of the surviving 63 violinas in the world today, and has said it is “among the rarest and most advanced automatic music players of its time.”

“Remarkably, both the piano and the violins are dynamic, allowing for a previously unheard-of range of volume and tone.” writes the team of M.S Rau. “From the most delicate pianissimo to a crashing fortissimo, the unparalleled instrument has the ability to render musical pieces with all of the skill and vigor of a real musician.” They add that over 900 music rolls were created for the Phonoliszt-Violina over the decades.

If you're enamored with this furniture-meets-instrument marvel, the one at M.S. Rau has a $885,000 price tag. Greenland is the largest island in the world. Yet, despite its prominent presence on the world map, most people know very little about its culture and the people who call this remote place home. This inspired a Greenlandic woman named Qupanuk to share and teach the world about life in Greenland through a series of insightful videos. Her channel, Q's Greenland, is a one-stop-shop to know everything about the country, from its traditional food to its unique language.

While many associate Greenland with remoteness and frigid temperatures, Qupanuk—or Q, as she is known—always takes the time to note that “life is amazing” there in her videos. On top of posting every day about what makes Greenland such a unique place, she is the country's first and only mining engineer and mother of four. Originally from Qaqortoq, in Southern Greenland, she currently lives Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, which has a population of under 20,000.

Her channel's name, Q's Greenland, is a reference to the fact that we're only seeing Greenland through her eyes. Even so, Q's deep understanding of the country and her charming personality make her the perfect teacher of this lesser-known place. She addresses all kinds of topics through her content, ranging from how hot summers get, to how much it costs to go grocery shopping there.

Although Greenland appears very remote, Q also highlights the ways it is connected to the rest of the world.  For example, she addresses what it means for her to hold Danish citizenship–as Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Additionally, she explains what it is like to have a front-row seat to the effects of climate change, as global warming has made the weather of Greenland much more unpredictable.

Whether it is a tour around Nuuk's tallest buildings—which are only 12 stories tall!— or a quick Greenlandic lesson, Q has painted a compelling picture of the most fascinating aspects of her home, becoming almost like an ambassador of the country to the rest of the world. Trains provide reliable, fast, and clean transportation—but apparently, they can also double as nightclubs. Every once in a while, a train in Germany becomes a party, welcoming DJs and ravers for a one-night-only reverie. Known as the Techno Train, this is not a revamped stationary car given a second chance, but rather a still-functional train that travels Bavaria with techno music blasting out of its windows.

The Techno Train is run by Haus 33, a Nuremberg nightclub. Every once in a while, they rent out an entire train, transforming all of its 12 cars into a club of its own, complete with a backstage area, dance floors, and areas to sit and recharge before returning once again to the party. The layout even allows different DJs to play at the same time, spacing them out throughout the train.

For their latest edition, the Techno Train departed from Nuremberg's Frankenstadion. From there, it went on an hours-long non-stop trip around the region before making a grand return to Nuremberg Central Station—and continuing with an after party at Haus 33 brick-and-mortar club. Unlike most raves, which take place late at night, the Techno Train departed at 3:45 PM, welcoming 20 DJs before wrapping up at 11 PM.

While some could find the confines of a train car too tight for a proper party, the videos from Techno Train show that the cars are not packed to the brim with people, allowing enough space for everyone to move and dance safely, and giving the DJs plenty of room to work. Ultimately, it looks so fun that we won't blame you for daydreaming about these parties next time you board a train or a subway. Among contemporary musical instruments, there are synthesizers, electronic drum kits, and electric guitars. But it turns out another instrument also has a modern counterpart. A video posted to Twitter by user @Vamos_DCU has been making waves online by introducing thousands of people to a unique invention—the electronic bagpipe.

The user first spotted this gadget when his seatmate took it out on a flight. “A guy in my flight apparently plays the bagpipes,” they write. “He has a little electric bagpipe he plugs his headphones into and only he can hear. He has been silently (to everyone but himself) ripping his bagpipe for five straight hours. I have no choice but to respect this.” The device looks like a black baton with a wider part at the top, but there's nothing in it that could give away its nature at first glance.

For those in the bagpipe world, these devices are known as digital chanters or practice chanters. The chanter is the black, recorder-like part of the bagpipe with finger holes for the player to create the melody. As such, a digital chanter allows the performer to practice without disturbing neighbors—whether on the ground or on a plane. Blair Bagpipes, one of the producers of such devices, shares that their digital chanters can also record and reproduce the sounds of up to nine different bagpipes.

While many associate bagpipes with a more solemn setting, being played by older men in kilts on the Scottish highlands, it's always important to remember how versatile an instrument can be. On top of that, it's inspiring to see new and more accessible alternatives for those hoping to take a deep dive into their favorite instrument.

Many music fans dream of seeing their favorite singers live. But for one woman named Annemarie Schmidt, the dream went even further. Not only did she get to see Ed Sheeran in an intimate venue, but she even got to share the spotlight with him. During the acoustic part of his set, Sheeran noticed the young woman harmonizing with him. Impressed by her voice and talent, the singer brought her on stage to sing with him.

The breathtaking moment took place during a show at Admiralspalast, a 1,756-seat theatre in Berlin. Although Sheeran usually plays sold out stadiums, he had chosen to play a smaller venue ahead of the release of his album Subtract. Towards the end of his set, made up of mostly then-unreleased tracks, he decided to play the traditional folk song “The Parting Glass,” as well as his hit “Afterglow.” As the 10 p.m. curfew loomed, he switched to playing acapella in a small platform surrounded by fans—including Schmidt.

When Sheeran sang through the first verse of the song, he noticed harmonizing on point, adding a beautiful layer to the song.  “Was singing ‘Afterglow’ as part of the encore in Berlin, when I heard [Annemarie] harmonizing with me, so decided to bring her up to finish the song with me,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. “This wasn’t pre planned at all, and she absolutely smashed it. Thanks so much for ending such a special show with me, I loved it.”

As for Schmidt, this was simply a wish come true. “Sometimes you have dreams that you don’t dare to say out loud because they seem so unrealistic to you,” she said, looking back at the moment. “And then suddenly in the blink of an eye they become true and you can’t believe how lucky you are. I am so grateful and honored.”

Since that chance encounter, Schmidt has kickstarted a musical career of her own. Recently, she announced that she will be part of the latest season of the German version of The Voice. With a little luck, she will soon have many dreaming of getting to share the stage with her one day.

During a show in Berlin, Ed Sheeran noticed a young woman harmonizing with him. Impressed by her voice and talent, the singer brought her on stage to sing with him.

Everyone deserves healthy meals; however, unfortunately, not everyone has access to fresh ingredients, especially those in underserved communities. A teenager named Lauren Schroeder realized this when she volunteered at a community food nonprofit at age 14. All vegetables and greens that were packed for families in need came in cans and boxes, rather than straight from the fields. Striving to make a change, Lauren set out to grow produce in her Iowa home so she could donate it to low-income families.

“I wanted people to get the nutrition they needed from fresh vegetables,” Lauren, who is now 17, told The Washington Post. This inspired her to start a garden in a half-acre area on her parents’ farm, hoping to grow lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, and zucchini. While her mom was supportive, she made her aware of how much work it would take—still, the teenager was up for the challenge.

To kickstart her project, Lauren got a grant from the National FFA Organization, which promotes agricultural education, to pay for seeds and gardening supplies. Then, the real work began. “I did a lot of research online to find out what worked and what didn’t, what plants needed shade, which ones needed more water and when the best time was to harvest each crop,” she said. Since the summers in Iowa are very hot and dry, she had to water them daily. Lauren added, “Every day, it took about two or three hours before or after softball practice.”

But all her efforts paid off. Her first harvest resulted in 40 pounds of produce that she then donated to eight local charities, including food banks, a soup kitchen, and a nursing home. “It was a really good feeling to know that anyone who wanted fresh vegetables would be able to get them,” Lauren said. “I knew that I wanted to keep going,”

That's why she relaunched her project for 2023, this time taking over a whole acre and expanding her veggie selection to include herbs, pumpkins, cauliflower, and jalapeños, among other greens. So far, she has spent over 1,000 hours working in the garden, which has resulted in 7,000 pounds of vegetables that she has happily donated.

Now that the harvest season has come to a close, the young woman is already making plans for next year. Lauren's new goal is to grown another 13,000 pounds of produce before she goes to college in 2025, bringing her donations up to 20,000 pounds. “I want to impact community members” she told KWQC. “Many people help you out, but it makes more difference when you help other people out. That’s what makes me most happy.”

Brass instruments are priceless creative tools for the musicians who play them. But no matter how much care goes into them, sometimes accidents happen. Luckily, there are specialized shops dedicated to restoring these beautiful instruments, whatever their level of damage. Recently, J. Landress Brass, a NYC-based brass instrument store and repair shop, gained a lot of attention for the marvelous job they did restoring a crushed trombone. The result is a sparkling instrument that looks almost brand new.

The team at J. Landress Brass captured a mesmerizing video to chronicle the repair process. The fact that the instrument has long lost its shine is the lesser of its problems. According to the store, the trombone “had a run in with a hydraulic seat” which led to its unfortunate state. The bell—the wide, speaker-like part—was so severely bent that it looks like a wilted flower. “They say [it's] unrepairable, but we're going to try to walk you through the steps of getting this fixed,” says Josh Landress, owner of the shop and repairer extraordinaire.

The process is far from smooth, and it looks nearly experimental. Landress reshapes it by hitting it like a blacksmith would, before trying to use his own body weight to bend the trombone back into shape with the help of a buffing cone for car wheels. With little success, Landress resorts to using a blowtorch and later flattening out the ridges with a metal roller.

“This particular bell had sustained severe damage, resulting in work-hardening of the metal,” the team explains. “In cases like these, the appropriate response is to anneal the bell, which rearranges the structure of the metal, softening it. Subsequently, the metal will reharden as we work out the ridges and dents from the bell.”

Once the bell has regained its shape, the next steps are getting rid of any creases and resoldering the edges. After a deep clean and buffering on many scales, the trombone is ready. While Landress humbly describes his work as “not 100% brand new perfect but pretty good,” the restoration he has done is nothing short of miraculous. The trombone does not look out of place with the rest of the instruments in his shop, and it shines so bright it may as well be ready for the stage.

Mariah Carey has become almost synonymous with Christmas ever since her hit “All I Want for Christmas is You” hit the airwaves. Now, Mattel has decided to ring in the holiday season by turning this pop icon into her own glamorous Barbie. The Mariah Carey Barbie Doll was crafted faithfully to capture her likeness, making her ready to fill any fan and collector's home with holiday cheer.

While Carey has rocked many festive outfits throughout the years, the designers have chosen one of her most iconic ensembles for her doll version. The Mariah Carey Barbie Doll dons a sparkly red gown, similar to the one she wore for the second music video, released in 2019 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the beloved holiday song. Her look includes her long wavy hair, famous butterfly ring, long silver earrings, and a matching microphone.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream to have my own Barbie! If I could go back and tell my little girl self that one day, I would have a Barbie made in my likeness, I think she would flip out,” Carey gushed in a statement released by Mattel. “I hope all collectors and fans everywhere enjoy the holiday season and hopefully the Mariah Barbie will be a wonderful addition to it.”

Whether as part of your holiday decor or as a loving gift for a Barbie lover, this doll is one for the ages—just like Mariah herself.
