Functional German Train Transforms Into a Moving Techno Club for One Night

Trains provide reliable, fast, and clean transportation—but apparently, they can also double as nightclubs. Every once in a while, a train in Germany becomes a party, welcoming DJs and ravers for a one-night-only reverie. Known as the Techno Train, this is not a revamped stationary car given a second chance, but rather a still-functional train that travels Bavaria with techno music blasting out of its windows.

The Techno Train is run by Haus 33, a Nuremberg nightclub. Every once in a while, they rent out an entire train, transforming all of its 12 cars into a club of its own, complete with a backstage area, dance floors, and areas to sit and recharge before returning once again to the party. The layout even allows different DJs to play at the same time, spacing them out throughout the train.

For their latest edition, the Techno Train departed from Nuremberg's Frankenstadion. From there, it went on an hours-long non-stop trip around the region before making a grand return to Nuremberg Central Station—and continuing with an after party at Haus 33 brick-and-mortar club. Unlike most raves, which take place late at night, the Techno Train departed at 3:45 PM, welcoming 20 DJs before wrapping up at 11 PM.

While some could find the confines of a train car too tight for a proper party, the videos from Techno Train show that the cars are not packed to the brim with people, allowing enough space for everyone to move and dance safely, and giving the DJs plenty of room to work. Ultimately, it looks so fun that we won't blame you for daydreaming about these parties next time you board a train or a subway. If you're in the Nuremberg area and would like to be aboard the next touring rave, follow Techno Train on Instagram for updates on their scheduling.

Every once in a while, a functional train in Germany is turned into a nightclub, welcoming DJs and ravers for a one-night-only reverie.

Known as the Techno Train, this is not a revamped stationary car given a second chance, but rather a very much functional train that travels Bavaria with techno music blasting out of its windows.

The layout even allows different DJs to play at the same time, spacing them out throughout the train.

In the 1940s, a mile-long series of tunnels called the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels were constructed underneath Central London. Encompassing an area of 8,000 square miles and stretching 7.6 meters in diameter, these subterranean pathways were designed to protect Londoners during the WWII Blitz. Afterward, the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels continued to serve different secret purposes, including as a base for the Special Operations Executive—an offshoot of MI6, and the inspiration for the “Q Branch” in Ian Fleming's James Bond novels—and housing the secret “hot line” between Moscow and Washington during the Cold War. Soon, people in London might have a chance to tour this piece of history that has been kept hidden for 70 years.

The London Tunnels is a proposed project that will transform the Kingsway Exchange into a public attraction. This set of secret passageways is going to receive a $268 million renovation led by UK-based architectural firm WilkinsonEyre.

“The proposal will adaptively reuse the tunnels to host a series of experiences exploring their history, nature, science, and the arts,” the official statement says. While the plans of what will be included in the revamped version of the tunnels is not yet set in stone, it is likely that it will include various historical exhibits dedicated to the different functions of the tunnels. Additionally, it is likely that the project will bring back the “deepest licensed bar” in London from the Kingsway Exchange days, which featured fake windows and recreational activities like snooker tables.

The Kingsway Exchange was kept out of the public eye for so long due to the British Government's Official Secrets Act. After the tunnels were expanded during the Cold War, they operated the first Transatlantic telephone cable, TAT1, which helped serve as the secret telephone exchange between Washington and Moscow. While the telecommunication technology became obsolete during the 1980s, most of this equipment will be retained for education purposes and potential historical exhibits in the tunnels. Paul Baker, Director at WilkinsonEyre says: “These secret spaces present the opportunity to tell extraordinary stories that helped shape the 20th century, alongside awe-inspiring digital immersive experiences.”

A potential opening date for the renovated tunnels is 2027. You can follow The London Tunnels on Instagram for updates.

After three and a half years, Singapore's Changi Airport has revealed Terminal 2's stunning makeover. It's an incredible accomplishment, considering that work began just two months before the airport shuttered its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with tourism numbers returning to pre-pandemic levels, the luxurious airport is greeting visitors with a modern flair.

With a design philosophy inspired by nature, travelers are in for an immersive experience that includes lush vertical gardens and an enormous digital display called The Waterfall. Located in the departure hall, the towering 46-foot display transports visitors into a majestic waterfall cascading over boulders.

The transit departure area has been dubbed Dreamscape. With its meticulously curated greenery and landscaped background, the area brings a sense of calm to the space. And for those who know how hectic travel can get, the tranquility is much appreciated. To top things off, a digital sky changes its hues throughout the day, allowing travelers to get fully lost in the environment.

Those looking to grab a bite while they wait for their flight will have the pleasure of enjoying the new Gourmet Garden. The space is strategically located to give panoramic views and is complimented by foliage draping down from above. There are also several bars and lounges scattered throughout the terminal. One even has a robot bartender named Toni who serves beverages in front of an LED screen projecting scenes of the Moon reflecting on a lake.

Sixteen airports currently operate out of the terminal, and their passengers will be able to take advantage of all that it has to offer. In fact, the space is so incredible that travelers will have a good excuse to get to the airport early.

After a three and a half year renovation, Changi Airport's new Terminal 2 is open.

If you’d like to travel back in time for an evening, there's a restaurant in Paris that will make you feel like you're back in the 1920s. Named after Mistinguett—a French singer-dancer and the highest paid female entertainer at the time—this stunning dining locale is located inside the music hall Casino de Paris. From the feathered Murano chandeliers, to the sumptuous vintage decor, no detail has been spared in making the Mistinguett a must-visit destination.

Architects Hugo Vince and Adèle Nourry helped put together the vintage-inspired restaurant. Diners have their choice of Art Deco seating, including velvet red booths and chairs with lacquered legs—many of which were sourced from antique stores in Europe. There is also a red and black leopard print carpet, dozens of artful lights, and a stunning Art Nouveau-style stained glass window which dates back to 1922.

The mouth-watering menu is put together by the chef Etienne Daviau, who changes the dishes according to the season and what is available. Guests can expect classic French cuisine with a modern flair, such as veal tenderloin wrapped in pastry and smoked chestnut butternut soup. Even the extensive drinking menu suits the establishment, with cocktails named after other famous showgirls of the era like Josephine Baker and Zizi Jeanmaire—all  of whom once graced the Parisian music halls. Keeping in style with this theme, the Mistinguett also features live entertainment, including singers, dancers, and acrobats to make diners feel like they're at a Gatsby-esque event.

You can book reservations for the Mistinguett restaurant via its website.

Jamal and "thanksgiving grandma" Wanda

Over the last eight years, Wanda Dench and Jamal Hinton have gotten together each year for Thanksgiving. In 2016, the pair became friends after Dench mistakenly texted Hinton, thinking she was inviting her grandson over for dinner. After a confusing exchange, Hinton asked her if he could still come over, to which Dench agreed, since grandmas wouldn't let anyone go without a plate of food. And so, a holiday tradition was born. If you've loved getting their yearly update, this year you can take it a step further and join them for Thanksgiving dinner in a new Airbnb experience.

“Our unexpected friendship may have started by accident, but our passion for meeting new people continues to fuel it almost a decade later,” they write on their Airbnb listing. “That's why this year, we're expanding our annual tradition and inviting new guests to spend Thanksgiving with us at Wanda's home—because that's what grandma’s do: feed everyone.”

The statement throws back to the original exchange Dench and Hinton had all those years ago. After getting a message from a random number from someone's grandma, Hinton replied, “You not my grandma. Can I still get a plate tho?” To which Dench replied, “Of course you can. That's what grandmas do… feed everyone.” Hinton then shared the exchange on Twitter with the caption, “Somebody grandma is coming in clutch this year!! Ayee!!!” boosting the exchange to viral status.

Now, you can be part of this heartwarming story by booking Dench's private guest room in Prescott Valley, Arizona, on Airbnb for a sweet Thanksgiving experience. The one-night stay will take place on Monday, November 20, and includes enjoying a Thanksgiving meal with both Dench and Hinton. On top of a home-cooked feast, you will join some of their traditions, like posing for their annual selfie, relaxing by the fire, and playing board games.

If you'd like to score this experience, the Airbnb booking will open at 11 a.m. MST on Tuesday, November 14, and will only cost $16 in honor of the year Hinton and Dench first met. To learn more about this unique experience, visit the listing on Airbnb.

This year, UNESCO has added 42 new sites to the UNESCO World Heritage list, bringing the total up to 1,199 landmarks across 168 countries. Selected for their historical or cultural significance, these sites will now benefit from the highest level of cultural protection, as well as access to financial assistance from UNESCO.

2023's selections include 33 cultural sites and nine natural sites. Thanks to five new inscribed sites, Africa has now passed a milestone. The continent is now home to 100 World Heritage Sites, and countries like Rwanda saw themselves added to the list for the first time. With the inclusion of Nyungwe National Park and the genocide memorial sites at Nyamata, Murambi, Gisozi, and Bisesero, the East African nation has two sites inscribed on the list.

In addition to adding new during its session, the World Heritage Committee also makes close evaluations of all World Heritage monuments to ensure their preservation. Following an ambitious restoration project, Uganda's Tombs of the Buganda Kings at Kasubi was removed from the World Heritage in Danger list. Unfortunately, two sites in Ukraine—Saint Sophia's Cathedral and complex of monastic and Lavra buildings in Kyiv-Pechersk and the ensemble of the historic center in Lviv—were added to the list due to the risk of shelling. Inclusion in the list will open the doors to critical technical and financial support for these sites at risk.

Check out some of the incredible sites added to this year's list and explore the full list on UNESCO's website.

Here are 6 of the 42 exceptional sites added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Gaya Tumuli (Republic of Korea)

Gaya Tumuli

Gaya Tumuli, Republic of Korea (Photo: Seo Heun Kang via UNESCO (Nomination File (non exclusive cession of rights: yes))

This serial property includes archaeological cemetery sites with burial mounds attributed to the Gaya Confederacy, which developed in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula from the 1st to the 6th century CE. Through their geographical distribution and landscape characteristics, types of burials, and grave goods, the cemeteries attest to the distinctive Gaya political system in which polities existed as autonomous political equals while sharing cultural commonalities. The introduction of new forms of tombs and the intensification of the spatial hierarchy in the tumuli sites reflect the structural changes experienced by Gaya society during its history. This massive complex includes an Inner and Outer Town surrounded by moats, the massive Khao Klang Nok ancient monument, and the Khao Thamorrat Cave ancient monument. Together these sites represent the architecture, artistic traditions and religious diversity of the Dvaravati Empire that thrived in Central Thailand from the 6th to the 10th centuries, demonstrating the influences from India. The local adaptation of these traditions resulted in a distinctive artistic tradition known as the Si Thep School of Art which later influenced other civilizations in Southeast Asia. This transnational property comprises fourteen component parts found across arid areas of Central Asia’s temperate zone between the Caspian Sea and the Turanian high mountains. The area is subject to extreme climatic conditions with very cold winters and hot summers and boasts an exceptionally diverse flora and fauna that has adapted to the harsh conditions. The property also represents a considerable diversity of desert ecosystems, spanning a distance of more than 1,500 kilometers from East to West. Each of the component parts complements the others in terms of biodiversity, desert types, and ongoing ecological processes.

Tak’alik Ab’aj is an archaeological site located on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala. Its 1,700-year history spans a period that saw the transition from the Olmec civilization to the emergence of Early Mayan culture. Tak’alik Ab’aj had a primary role in this transition, in part because it was vital to the long-distance trade route that connected the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in today's Mexico to present-day El Salvador. Ideas and customs were shared extensively along this route. Sacred spaces and buildings were laid out according to cosmological principles, and innovative water management systems, ceramics, and lapidary art can be found. Today, Indigenous groups of different affiliations still consider the site a sacred place and visit it to perform rituals.

Built between 1774 and 1781, this property is a moving mechanical scale model of the solar system as it was known at the time. Conceived and built by an ordinary citizen—the wool manufacturer Eise Eisinga—the model is built into the ceiling and south wall of the former living room/bedroom of its creator. Powered by one single pendulum clock, it provides a realistic image of the positions of the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, and five other planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn). The planets revolve around the Sun in real-time, and the distance between the planets is at scale. The model fills the entire ceiling of the room, making it one of the earliest predecessors of the ceiling and projection planetariums of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Anticosti (Canada)

Island of Anticosti

Anticosti, Canada (Photo: Pierre Bertrand/© Municipalité (MIA) via UNESCO (Nomination File (non exclusive cession of rights: yes))

Situated on the island of Anticosti, the largest island in Quebec, this property is the most complete and best preserved paleontological record of the first mass extinction of animal life, 447-437 million years ago. It contains the best preserved fossil record of marine life, covering 10 million years of Earth's history. The abundance, diversity, and exquisite preservation of the fossils are exceptional and allow for world-class scientific work. Thousands of large bedding surfaces allow the observation and study of shell and sometimes soft-bodied animals that lived on the shallow sea floor of an ancient tropical sea.

Many of the dishes we enjoy today are the result of age-old recipes being passed down from generation to generation. But there’s one place in Spain where you can sit and enjoy traditional plates in the same locale that has been serving patrons for nearly 300 years. Sobrino de Botín, in Madrid, is considered the oldest restaurant in the world by the Guinness World Records.

Not only has it been continually in service since the 18th century, but its oven has been kept hot even during the Spanish Civil War and the COVID-19 pandemic. Plus, the building that houses Sobrino de Botín is even older—dating back to 1590. Today, the restaurant occupies four stories and can only be accessed through one wooden door. It employs 70 people and can seat up to 200 patrons.

This famed inn was founded by a French chef named Jean Botin in 1725 under the name Casa Botín. Since he and his wife didn't have children, the restaurant was inherited by one of his nephews in 1753. That was when it was renamed to Sobrino de Botín, referencing the new management—and has kept that name ever since. The restaurant changed owners once again in the 20th century when it was purchased by the González family, who continue to operate it to this day.

On top of its long history, Sobrino de Botín is also known for serving delicious Castilian cuisine, especially its world-famous roast suckling pigs with potatoes and Spanish ham on the side.

With so many years in the business, it has borne witness to many historical events and many figures have walked through its doors. For example, Francisco de Goya worked in its kitchen before becoming a painter. During the 20th century, Ernest Hemingway visited the restaurant frequently, and even mentioned it in his book The Sun Also Rises (1926). Of course, its delicacies continue to conquer modern palates—making Botín, as it is known by the locals, a Madrid staple.

If you find yourself in the Spanish capital, you can reserve a table here. To learn more about their menu and history, visit their website.

Have you ever taken a vacation and had so much fun that you wished it could go on forever? For Marty and Jess Ansen, a retired Australian couple, they enjoyed being at sea so much that they have booked 51 back-to-back cruises. And while this is a product of their 40-year-long love for sea travel, it is also informed by another factor—the couple realized that living on cruises is less costly than staying in a retirement home. So far, they've spent close to 500 days sailing around the world.

“Cruising is what we do. Once COVID-19 came, we couldn’t cruise, so we booked as many as we could once it started again,” the husband explained in an interview with Australia's Today. “Eventually I said to my agent, ‘Look, whatever comes, book it,’ and that’s how it got to be such a long cruise.”

Once COVID restrictions were lifted, the couple began their adventure aboard the Coral Princess in June 2022, which recently docked in Sydney to restock the ship before making its way to Hawaii. Once that trip is over, they'll board another cruise, the Crown Princess, to sail around the world once again.

Since all their needs are taken care of aboard the cruise, the couple makes a compelling case for never getting off. “You have all your meals prepared, you don’t have to cook, you go to a show every evening and go dancing after the show, then you go for supper and head back to your cabin.”

While some would dread the idea of being stuck on a ship for extended periods of time, the couple avoids getting cabin fever by only returning to their quarters at night, and doing separate activities throughout the day. While Marty goes to the deck to play sports, Jess likes spending her time with quizzes and bingo.

The happy couple seems to have nailed down cruise life, and even feel at peace with being away from their families. “They’re all busy,” Ansen shares. But they do have occasional reunions when they visit a port near where a relative lives. Ultimately, their life at sea is all about making the most out of every day. Jess says, “We’re in a place in our lives where we just want to enjoy it.”

Have you ever wished you could travel back in time? Well, there's a place that will immediately transport you back 100 years for the night. After completing a $19 million renovation, The Hotel Chalet at The Choo Choo presents completely restored train carriages from the 1920s and 1960s which have been redesigned as guest rooms in the style of their era.

The one-of-a-kind accommodations are located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Designer Jenny Bukovec converted the interiors of the train cars into luxurious retreats, using inspiration from the 20s and 60s to make them an immersive experience. The 1920s cars, for instance, feature Tiffany glass pendants, while the 1960s rooms are modeled after midcentury modern aesthetics. From the wallpaper to the eclectic furniture, no detail was spared in making the carriages a visual delight. “The hotel encapsulates the nostalgia and allure of rail travel's heyday, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a memorable and immersive experience in the heart of Chattanooga's Southside,” Jake Lamstein, owner of The Hotel Chalet at The Choo Choo, says.

While the appeal of the hotel is its vintage charm, the renovations ensure that each room includes modern amenities as well. For instance, all bathrooms are stocked with toiletries by The Botanist & The Chemist, and the beds feature Italian linens. Additionally, the rooms come with a smart TV as well as USB charging stations. Outside, guests can also enjoy a large swimming pool, a sundeck, and a fire pit. There's also an on-site restaurant called Elsie's Daughter, which serves Southern cuisine. Every stay here is a retreat from modern life and a glimpse into the past. “It reflects the spirit of rail travel by inviting guests to embark on a journey, not just to their destination, but also through time,” Lamstein adds. “That spirit of adventure and elegance permeates every aspect of the hotel's design and guest experience.”

The Hotel Chalet at The Choo Choo opens on October 31, 2023. You can make reservations to experience the heyday of rail travel via their website.

No matter how much research you do before a trip, some culture shock is inescapable. That's why it's always good to be on top of the situation and be aware of any different etiquette rules that apply to the place you're visiting. While good behavior is considered universal, Remitly has compiled a map of etiquette around the world, and you'd be surprised what could get you deemed rude or impolite elsewhere.

One of the most fascinating aspects of their findings is the contrast among all of the countries. For example, somewhere as near as Canada calls for arriving fashionably late; however, in Austria, punctuality is regarded as a sign of respect, so you might as well be there on time. And while tipping is customary in the U.S., it isn't in a place like Slovenia. In Norway, you should never use your hands to eat, but don't you dare reach for a knife and a fork when eating tacos in Mexico. Those are always eaten with your hands.

In fact, many of these international etiquette rules concern food. In Egypt and Portugal, you should never ask for salt when having dinner. In Sierra Leone, you should always leave a small amount of food when eating. And if you ever have a large meal in Australia, refrain from saying “I'm stuffed˝—down there it means being pregnant, not full. Loved the food? Burping is socially acceptable in Iceland and Senegal as a way of expressing it, while in Japan slurping is a way of saying ‘thank you' for the meal.

Ultimately, the map offers a quick glance at worldwide customs, and how they translate into our daily routines. Just as a general takeaway, avoid pointing with your finger, be mindful of everyone's time, and greet the elders first. To learn more about etiquette rules around the world, visit Remitly's website and browse the regional etiquette maps below.
