In the 1940s, a mile-long series of tunnels called the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels were constructed underneath Central London. Encompassing an area of 8,000 square miles and stretching 7.6 meters in diameter, these subterranean pathways were designed to protect Londoners during the WWII Blitz. Afterward, the Kingsway Exchange Tunnels continued to serve different secret purposes, including as a base for the Special Operations Executive—an offshoot of MI6, and the inspiration for the “Q Branch” in Ian Fleming's James Bond novels—and housing the secret “hot line” between Moscow and Washington during the Cold War. Soon, people in London might have a chance to tour this piece of history that has been kept hidden for 70 years.

The London Tunnels is a proposed project that will transform the Kingsway Exchange into a public attraction. This set of secret passageways is going to receive a $268 million renovation led by UK-based architectural firm WilkinsonEyre.

“The proposal will adaptively reuse the tunnels to host a series of experiences exploring their history, nature, science, and the arts,” the official statement says. While the plans of what will be included in the revamped version of the tunnels is not yet set in stone, it is likely that it will include various historical exhibits dedicated to the different functions of the tunnels. Additionally, it is likely that the project will bring back the “deepest licensed bar” in London from the Kingsway Exchange days, which featured fake windows and recreational activities like snooker tables.

The Kingsway Exchange was kept out of the public eye for so long due to the British Government's Official Secrets Act. After the tunnels were expanded during the Cold War, they operated the first Transatlantic telephone cable, TAT1, which helped serve as the secret telephone exchange between Washington and Moscow. While the telecommunication technology became obsolete during the 1980s, most of this equipment will be retained for education purposes and potential historical exhibits in the tunnels. Paul Baker, Director at WilkinsonEyre says: “These secret spaces present the opportunity to tell extraordinary stories that helped shape the 20th century, alongside awe-inspiring digital immersive experiences.”

With surging rents in the biggest metro areas in the world, many people have started looking for alternatives. For some, that means flocking to smaller, more affordable cities. For others, it's all about shrinking down. Japan, home to Tokyo, the largest city in the world, is no stranger to tiny living. But how tiny does it get? A viral video offers a glimpse into Japan's slimmest home, showing the creative extents of space-saving in the land of the rising sun.

The clip, shared by TikTok user @pixelpaws11, presents what looks like a tiny house, but it's actually two apartments stacked on top of each other. These small abodes are nestled between a bustling street and a smaller road, with a width that is just marginally wider than a regular door. The host walks inside the lower unit through a sliding door, commenting, “The layout is pretty quirky.”

However, despite it's small size, the flat doesn't lack basic amenities. It is equipped with a kitchenette and a bathroom, and its design even takes into account space for a washing machine and a line to hang your laundry. While it doesn't look cramped in the beginning of the video, it is only 107 square feet, and the TikToker couldn't even stretch out her arms at its narrowest point.

To make the most out of this tiny apartment, the designers also utilized the small area beneath the stairs that connects the upper floor to the street. Here, they placed the trash can, and hung the AC by the door so the bulkier part sits outside. Despite how small the apartment is, it also features windows on both sides, so getting natural light is no issue.

While giving this kind of housing option comes down to personal choice, one thing is for sure—adapting small spaces is a great exercise for creativity. Get a tour of this peculiar small apartment in the video below.

Nestled outside of Tulum, Mexico— in the heart of the Mayan jungle—Roth Architecture created an organically shaped office and maker space. Using concrete and palm fiber, the pod-like structures embrace their natural surroundings with curves that hug trees or bring their trunks into the interior. In this way, the office and FabLab form an organic hub for the Azulik City of Arts.

Established by Roth, Azulik City of Arts aims to link ancestral traditions with contemporary hospitality, gastronomy, fashion, architecture, and design. By placing its headquarters in Azulik, the firm is bringing its creative reach to the jungle and leading by example.

In fact, the jungle is a big source of inspiration for the structures. “Both the doors and the windows use patterns and shapes that could be reminiscent of tree leaves or insect wings from the jungle,” shares the firm.

The interiors use the same organic forms as the exteriors, with curved built-in desks and shelving. Inside the FabLab, cutting-edge machinery is easily placed thanks to the structure's varying ceiling heights. Additionally, by situating itself in the heart of the jungle, Roth Architecture is immersing its employees in the very nature that will inspire their creativity.

Founded by self-taught architect Eduardo “Roth” Neira, Roth Architecture prides itself on creating designs where nature and its preservation are a priority.

Roth Architecture has built its offices and creative workshop in the heart of the Mayan jungle.

Located outside of Tulum, Mexico, the designs are inspired by organic forms.

These structures are nestled within the Azulik City of Arts, which is founded by Roth.

After three and a half years, Singapore's Changi Airport has revealed Terminal 2's stunning makeover. It's an incredible accomplishment, considering that work began just two months before the airport shuttered its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with tourism numbers returning to pre-pandemic levels, the luxurious airport is greeting visitors with a modern flair.

With a design philosophy inspired by nature, travelers are in for an immersive experience that includes lush vertical gardens and an enormous digital display called The Waterfall. Located in the departure hall, the towering 46-foot display transports visitors into a majestic waterfall cascading over boulders.

The transit departure area has been dubbed Dreamscape. With its meticulously curated greenery and landscaped background, the area brings a sense of calm to the space. And for those who know how hectic travel can get, the tranquility is much appreciated. To top things off, a digital sky changes its hues throughout the day, allowing travelers to get fully lost in the environment.

Those looking to grab a bite while they wait for their flight will have the pleasure of enjoying the new Gourmet Garden. The space is strategically located to give panoramic views and is complimented by foliage draping down from above. There are also several bars and lounges scattered throughout the terminal. One even has a robot bartender named Toni who serves beverages in front of an LED screen projecting scenes of the Moon reflecting on a lake.

Sixteen airports currently operate out of the terminal, and their passengers will be able to take advantage of all that it has to offer. In fact, the space is so incredible that travelers will have a good excuse to get to the airport early.

After a three and a half year renovation, Changi Airport's new Terminal 2 is open.

The immersive interior design is inspired by nature and includes lush greenery and a digital waterfall.

The space is filled with so much shopping, dining, and entertainment that it will make you want to get to the airport early.

Architectural designer Tim Fu, formerly of Zaha Hadid Architects, is embracing AI technology and showing how the tool can be integrated into architectural practices. A recent exercise using a crumpled piece of paper and LookX, an AI platform for designers and architects, is particularly interesting.

Fu was inspired by Frank Gehry‘s infamous creative practice, which was immortalized on The Simpsons. He decided to see how LookX, which is trained on architectural sets, would respond to pieces of plain white crumpled paper. By uploading an image and using different famous architects as prompts, he was able to achieve incredible results.

“I wanted to showcase how the arbitrariness of an input can be interpreted by the AI to produce very refined results, thus showcasing how the stark contrast between whimsicality and intention can both play a role in design,” he explains.

These AI buildings are each distinct interpretations of the paper's form and, in many ways, do seem like plausible designs by the respective architects. Fu is already incorporating AI into his practice at Studio Tim Fu and sees AI as a clear way forward for designers.

“AI will surely disrupt our current mode of practicing architecture and design,” he shares. “As a whole, I believe it will cause a significant positive impact on our society. AI is the next step in our technological revolution. Processes of design and production will become much more automated, streamlining various processes together and reducing human inefficiencies.”

At the same time, he's also aware that there will be growing pains as the industry adapts to AI. “There are also inevitable negatives, such as the necessity for [the] human workforce to redistribute. This has always been the case with new technologies, and humans need to continually adapt.”

Melike Altınışık Architects (MAA) is one of five firms that were shortlisted in the hopes of designing Seoul's 2nd Sejong Cultural Center for Performing Arts. The firm's proposal, which was made in collaboration with BAUM Architects and Aliveus Landscape, is called The Spark and consists of five buildings that form a unified hub.

MAA's proposal includes a 2,000-seat performance hall, a smaller 700-seat theater, a museum and exhibition space, as well as an education and management center. All of the buildings share a common basement level with underground parking. Thanks to the elliptical shape of the buildings and large pedestrian bridges, visitors can move around the complex and enjoy a wide array of cultural programming.

An elevated plaza extends the park to the waterfront and helps create a stronger connection between the Han River and Yeouido Park. MAA's integration of the natural landscape and efforts to seamlessly tie together the cultural site with the environment surely caught the eye of competition officials. The Seoul Metropolitan Government is looking to transform Yeouido Park into a cultural center with a thriving financial district, and these design decisions certainly hit the mark.

Each building in the complex is strategically placed to provide a view of either the river or the park. Along ground level, restaurants, cafes, and art shops will provide visitors with a wide variety of dining and shopping options. Taking care to cater to local traditions, The Spark provides ample space for indoor and outdoor events.

The Spark was selected for the shortlist along with projects by Durig AG, DMP Architects + Viron, Heerim Architects, and Zaha Hadid Architects + ULD Studio. All of the projects will now pass to the design phase, with the final announcement of the winner set for the first half of 2025.

The elliptical design is made up of five buildings and helps connect the waterfront with Yeouido Park.

The project will now pass to the design phase, with an overall winner to be announced in 2025.

If you’d like to travel back in time for an evening, there's a restaurant in Paris that will make you feel like you're back in the 1920s. Named after Mistinguett—a French singer-dancer and the highest paid female entertainer at the time—this stunning dining locale is located inside the music hall Casino de Paris. From the feathered Murano chandeliers, to the sumptuous vintage decor, no detail has been spared in making the Mistinguett a must-visit destination.

Architects Hugo Vince and Adèle Nourry helped put together the vintage-inspired restaurant. Diners have their choice of Art Deco seating, including velvet red booths and chairs with lacquered legs—many of which were sourced from antique stores in Europe. There is also a red and black leopard print carpet, dozens of artful lights, and a stunning Art Nouveau-style stained glass window which dates back to 1922.

The mouth-watering menu is put together by the chef Etienne Daviau, who changes the dishes according to the season and what is available. Guests can expect classic French cuisine with a modern flair, such as veal tenderloin wrapped in pastry and smoked chestnut butternut soup. Even the extensive drinking menu suits the establishment, with cocktails named after other famous showgirls of the era like Josephine Baker and Zizi Jeanmaire—all  of whom once graced the Parisian music halls. Keeping in style with this theme, the Mistinguett also features live entertainment, including singers, dancers, and acrobats to make diners feel like they're at a Gatsby-esque event.

All eyes will be on Osaka when the 2025 World Expo opens. Coming on the heels of Expo 2020 in Dubai, Japan is ready to host hundreds of nations in a special event that will span six months. Sou Fujimoto Architects has been charged with creating the masterplan for the event. The firm's centerpiece, a large circular structure made of wood, is currently under construction on an artificial island in Osaka Bay that will host the event.

With a diameter of nearly a half mile and covering almost 15 acres, the structure will encircle the island. Sou Fujimoto designed the building as a way to advocate for diversity while still embracing the connection between humans. With its circular nature, it will unite everyone under “one sky.”

“Everyone around the world is looking up at the same sky. The one sky connects all parts of the world,” states the firm. “It is what people all over the world share. The one sky thus represents unity in diversity. The Expo venue will have the ‘one sky’ in it.”

The massive Expo venue will move from land to sea, enclosing part of the water and allowing it to mirror the sky. Inside the structure, the national pavilions and the natural features of the environment will mix together to bring the expo to life. A main thoroughfare will give access to all parts of the venue and will also include plazas designed as meeting points and event spaces.

Sou Fujimoto's selection of wood is a purposeful nod to Japanese tradition, as timber construction is commonly used in temples. The ring will contain walkways while also providing shelter during inclement weather. In addition, a rooftop observation deck with seasonal landscaping is also part of the design.

Expo 2025's theme is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” With architects beginning to reveal their designs for the different national pavilions, it's clear that designers are taking the theme to heart. And with construction underway, Expo 2025 is already on a good path to be ready for the public in time for the April 2025 opening.

Tiny living looks increasingly like one of the easiest ways to fix the housing crisis in the largest cities in the world—especially those with particularly high costs of living. But how tiny is too tiny? YouTuber Cash Jordan, known for his expertise in rentals around the world, rented a 90-square foot apartment in Osaka, Japan, and documented his experience to ponder whether he could see in a space like that in the long run.

For $40 a night, the place looked like a good deal, especially because it was fully appointed and in a convenient location. “In typical Japanese fashion, it comes with room shoes, a tiny little micro kitchen, and a full bathroom with its own set of room shoes,” Jordan explains. “Plus you can take a bath if you really want to. The washer is bigger than the fridge, and the microwave and it’s in the best part of Osaka, Japan, right by all the arcades, all the shops, and all the restaurants.”

To save space, the landlords came up with some clever tricks, like a bathroom door that folds inwards or placing the toaster on top of the microwave. Still, the catch wasn't in the lack of space—after all, Jordan makes it work and seems to appreciate the cozy element to it. However, the noisy bar across the street and the bright light coming in during the day and the night makes it hard to fall asleep.

While it doesn't comfortable for someone on the taller side of the spectrum, maybe someone shorter and on a budget could feel right at home. However, this kind of micro apartment is illegal in the U.S, as Jordan explained in a later video, when he moved to a (marginally larger) 120-square feet micro-apartment. While the illegality of these kinds of dwellings is attributed to safety, it does pose interesting questions on how to optimize space in densely populated areas—and how to do it with dignity for all those looking for their own place.

YouTuber Cash Jordan, known for his expertise in rentals around the world, rented a 90-square foot place in Osaka to experience what it’s like to live in a Japanese micro-apartment.
